Group Chief Technology Officer, National University Health System
Deputy Chief Medical Informatics Officer, National University Hospital
Associate Professor Ngiam Kee Yuan is a long-time advocate for the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare. He has initiated numerous deep learning methods in clinical validation in preparation for clinical deployment throughout the NUHS cluster, as well as to support community healthcare efforts by leveraging extensive inter-disciplinary work between the School of Computing and Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine at the National University of Singapore and international collaborators such as the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC).
A/Prof Ngiam led the operationalisation of the DISCOVERY AI platform – a translational research-to-production AI platform that is the basis for operational validation of advanced deep learning AI models – by encouraging collaboration between computer scientists and clinicians (e.g. to iteratively improve algorithms that are clinically useful). Since its launch, the platform has promoted inter-disciplinary collaborations, reduced the time to translation and accelerated the pace of healthcare innovation.
Through the cultivation of an innovation-driven environment by leveraging the AI expertise in the National University Health System, A/Prof Ngiam has led the development of transformative solutions (at a clinical trial stage), which includes:
- A general 30-day re-admission predictor, including ranked causes of re-admission;
- A time series model that predicts glomerular filtration rate up to 40 weeks ahead in patients with chronic kidney disease;
- A patented language programming model that is able to provide the diagnosis of appendicitis at the emergency department from physician free text; and
- Numerous other AI solutions in the pipeline that can improve the doctor’s performance, enhance safety in the hospital, enable drug discovery, optimise a patient’s hospital trajectory, deliver value care to patients and enable social support in the community.
A/Prof Ngiam has filed a patent for computerised diagnosis based on clinical notes, and published extensively on the research and application of Data Analytics and AI in healthcare, most recently for the 2018 IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM).
He is also Chief Advisor to the Centre of Innovation in Healthcare (CIH), which is located at Alexandra Hospital, now operated by the National University Health System. CIH is the site whereby exciting new healthcare models will be developed.
